A moment with the Master

Matthew 9:27-31

Two blind men followed Jesus crying out, “Son of David, have pity on us!”  When he entered the house, the blind men approached him and Jesus said to them, “Do you believe that I can do this?” “Yes, Lord,” they said to him.  Then he touched their eyes and said, “Let it be done for you according to your faith.”  And their eyes were opened.

Jesus warned them sternly, “See that no one knows about this.”  But they went out and spread word of him through all that land.

What happened to these blind men was so natural they could only call it “super” natural.  In the presence of one un-fallen man – Jesus, they returned for a moment to the unfallen state themselves.  Jesus touched them and they could see.  Naturally.

What a gift to share with those he touched: this unbroken communion with God. I think Jesus wanted that moment to last as long as possible for these guys.  “Don’t say anything,” he told them.  Let this experience sit within you, savor it, know the joy of being loved by your Father, and don’t dilute that with words.  No words, none.  No gratitude or exultation, not even that.  There will be time for lifting up your joy, plenty of time.  Later.  For now, just be still.  Bask in being loved.

No easy task for me or them or any of us, of course.  Suddenly they could see, and they looked at one another, and their eyes sparked, and words flew.  Jesus had more to give them, but they could not receive all of it.  And so they spoke.

Their lives, along with mine, are so rooted in the world where we are the center.  I am usually in awe of what God is doing, especially in my life or the lives of those I know.  It’s a different experience entirely to simply be in His presence and know the awe that Jesus knew every day of his life on earth, the awe of being with Him.  To that there is no response but silence.

One thing I ask from you, Lord, this is what I seek: that I may dwell in the house of the Lord all the days of my life.  Wait.  Be strong.  Take heart.  Wait.
