 John 13:5-6

Jesus poured water into a basin and began to wash the disciples’ feet and dry them with the towel around his waist.  He came to Simon Peter, who said to him, “Master, are you going to wash my feet?”

My feet have never meant so much to me.  Every other day of the year, I take them for granted.  But today they are being washed by Jesus.  Cleanse me with hyssop, and I will be clean.

In the beginning we ate our Passover lamb with sandals on.  God wanted us ready to move at his sign, blood, fire, or wind.  God protected our feet.  Our feet let us move, and find the right place to stand.

My shoes never come off, Jesus.  I am ready to move when you are.  You are Master, you are Lord.  Where should I go?  How can I help you right here, right now?  What do you need me to do?  I’ll walk on water!

You laugh, remembering.  I have to laugh too, but I don’t want to laugh.  I WANT to walk on water when it’s toward you.  Nothing in my life is the same since I’ve met you, Jesus.  You chose me from so many fishermen – why me?  I’m such an emotional man, angry too often, getting ahead of myself and tripping over my own feet.  And I hate to show it, but I am sometimes full of fear.

What freedom you bring us all.  Wash me, Jesus, and I will be whiter than snow.  With what you say and what you do, you give us permission to wash each other.  Now we will all be whiter than snow.

You kiss my foot, Jesus, and I am overwhelmed with love.  You are teaching me to kiss the feet of my brothers, Lord.  Let me never forget.

Create in me a pure heart, O God, and renew a right spirit within me.  Cast me not from your presence, or take your Holy Spirit from me.  Restore unto me the joy of your salvation, and grant me a willing spirit to follow you.  Open up my lips, and my mouth will pour forth in your praise.
