Second Week of Advent

Matthew 18:14

Jesus said, “It is not the will of your heavenly Father that one of these little ones be lost.”

Jesus brings a challenge to his listeners.  This isn’t the god of just the chosen people, but of every man and woman who has lived on the earth or will live on the earth.  This Father is the source of every human life, and the protector of every human life.  All are precious.

I know every baby is precious.  Every three year old is precious.  Every thirty year old doesn’t seem so precious, and every sixty year old … well, we’re more cantankerous-sticks-in-the-mud than “precious.”  I don’t know a lot of young people who spend their days tracking down Alzheimer’s patients who have flown the coop.

God’s mindset could not be more different.  There is never a moment when God is preoccupied with more important matters.  Every person is the most important person.  And this is not a game God’s playing, or something He “feels strongly” about.  This is the Nature of God.  Love, which means his commitment to our well-being, is All He Is.

Jesus’ words stretch our minds, but whatever I imagine to be the depth of God’s love doesn’t scratch the surface.

As I get older and more wrinkly, Lord, I know I’m not as cute as I used to be.  And my skin isn’t baby soft anymore.  And I get befuddled and bewildered, and seem (at least to myself) pretty silly sometimes.  So I appreciate your love more than ever.  For each level down I drill into life, you raise me up, touch my face so tender, look at me and smile.
