Jesus’ furious love

Matthew 18:12-14

Jesus said to his disciples, “If someone has a hundred sheep and one of them wanders off, doesn’t he leave the ninety-nine and go after the one?  And if he finds it, doesn’t he make far more over it than over the ninety-nine who stay put?  Your Father in heaven feels the same way.  He doesn’t want even one of these little ones to be lost.”

Some of us stay just where we’re supposed to, and some of us do a lot of wandering.  I tend to be a wanderer.  I have a friend who is a wanderer too.  We both rejoice in the words of Psalm 139: “If I go up to the heavens, you are there; if I make my bed in the depths, you are there.”

It’s not just when I’m being righteous, ascending to the heavens.  No, even when I sink into the silt of my own version of hell, still – the psalm says and Jesus affirms – my Father is with me.  He calls to me not from outside the gates of hell but from right beside me, wherever I am, however deeply I have sunk.  Jesus showed us with his own example that God doesn’t look out for his reputation, He has no regard for how others see him; He only pours out his love on me, his unending, furious love.  Nothing’s gonna stop that.  Never.

Nothing can tear us from
The grip of His mighty love
We’ve only glimpsed, His vast affection
Heard whispers of, His heart and passion
It’s pouring down…

His love is deep, His love is wide
And it covers us
His love is fierce, His love is strong
It’s furious
His love is sweet, His love is wild
And it’s waking hearts to life                 — Jeremy Riddle

You, Jesus, were a man without guile.  “Do not be afraid,” you say.  So I will not be afraid.  “I will never leave you,” you say.  I believe you.  I am safe with you.
