First Week of Advent

Matthew 9:28-29

Jesus said to them, “Do you believe that I can do this?” “Yes, Lord,” they said to him. Then he touched their eyes.

I sit here typing with my eyes closed. My fingers find their way around the keys. “Do you believe that I can do this?” Jesus’ voice echoes down corridors, through the history in my mind. Always he has asked, do you believe I can do this, David? How about this? How about this? You are blind, I am not. Jesus wants to open my eyes and show me the light.

Light has come into the world, he tells Nicodemus in John 3. Will you look? Let me touch your eyes. Will you accept your blindness, and let me touch your eyes? There is light here to be had.

Every day the question comes again. What do you want me to do for you, David? I will touch you, give you sight, bring the light. Wise men brought me gifts; now I have gifts beyond compare to share with you.

This is the smartest man in the history of the world, who oversees the history of the world instant by instant, millennium by millennium. What a grace to be asked that question. What do you want me to do for you?

Held up in my hands to the light, this question shines like a jewel, Lord. You mean to listen to my answer and give me what I ask. No more genies in the lamp who limit us to three wishes. Alpha and Omega, you are with me through and to the end. Always you bring something new. Life lives on in you.
